Braveheart car park which is the first car park on the right down Glen Nevis. From the railway station in Fort William, follow the A82 north (Inverness) until Glen Nevis is signposted off a roundabout. On 21/10/17, parking was free.

Distance/Time

10 km.      About 3 hours.

Peaks

Dun Deardail Hill Fort, c 390 m, NN 127 701.     OS Sheet 41.

Introduction

This is a very straightforward walk although it does climb to nearly 400 m. Most of it is on a good forestry track which could easily be cycled. A well made path takes one from the track to the hill. There are good views across Glen Nevis to Meall an t-Suidhe and Ben Nevis. Unfortunately, none of the ancient hill fort remains for non-expert archaeologists although there is a useful information board with a reconstruction picture at the point where the path leaves the track.

Route

(1) Follow the track, green way mark posts, from the gate out of the car park. Follow this, passing the occasional way mark. Significant junctions such as the Peat Track and the track to Achriabhach are well signed. After a very wide bend, reach the sign post and information board where the path to the hill leaves the track. Follow the path, for some distance, to the summit where there is no cairn but this is Dun Deardail Hill Fort, c 390 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 21st October, 2017.
