Biod an Fhithich from A87 to East of Shiel Bridge

Biod an Fhithich from A87 to East of Shiel Bridge

Start/Finish

About 3 miles south of Shiel Bridge garage on the A87 from Invergarry to the Kyle of Lochalsh. The route starts about 300 m north of the bridge at NG 970 140. There is a lay by about 200 m nearer to Shiel Bridge. Opposite this lay by is a path which looks like the start of the route but it isn't so don't take it! Walk 200 m south to a more obvious path which soon leads to an iron gate.

Distance/Time

6 km     About 3 hours

Peaks

Biod an Fhitich, 644 m, NG 950 147.     OS sheet 33.

Introduction

This is a short walk which many will “tag on” to a walk up The Saddle as it only adds about an hour to this route. However, it stands alone as a fine walk up the smallest mountain in Glen Shiel. On a clear day there are good views to the Five Sisters and The Saddle.

Route

(1) From the start of the correct path, walk up the zig-zagging stalkers' path to reach the col between Meallan Odhar and Biod an Fhithich. Walk N from the col. There is a faint path most of the way. If in doubt, stay close to the crest which becomes rocky near the summit but much easier on its W side. Reach a small cairn which marks the summit of Biod an Fhitich, 644 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route.

Notes

(a) This walk took place on 6th May, 2015.

(b) Accommodation is limited at Shiel Bridge but there are two camp sites. One behind the garage, the other at Morvich on the old road around Loch Duich. The latter is run by the Caravan Club and has very good facilities including Wi-Fi.
