Start/Finish

Small lay by just to the E of the public footpath sign just to the E of Callert House (name not obvious from the road) on the B863 road along the N side of Loch Leven at about NN 093 604. There is a much longer lay by on the loch side of the road just to the W of Callert House.

Distance/Time

7 km      Approx 3½ hours

Peaks

Tom Meadhoin, 621 m, NN 087 621. OS sheet 41.

Introduction

A pleasant half-day walk on easy grassy slopes. From the summit, there are excellent views of the Glencoe peaks, the Ballachulish peaks, across Loch Linnhe to Garbh Bheinn, the western Mamores and even Ben More on Mull. It is worth saving this walk for a clear day. Sadly, Ben Nevis is obscured by the Mamores. Note that the footpath is incorrectly shown on pre-1990 maps. It does not follow the edge of the wood but is further to the E.

Route

(1) From the lay by, walk W along the road to the public footpath sign and follow the path through a thin wood. On emerging from the wood, the path roughly follows a line of telegraph poles uphill. A couple of sign posts help to point the way. A telecommunications mast is passed about 200 m to its east. The path seems to be aiming for the top right hand corner of the forest on the left. Higher up, a craggy outcrop (the only one and it has an obvious tree on its E side) is passed on its right. Climb to the bealach between Tom Meadhoin and Mam na Gualainn where there is a cairn. Turn left, W, and follow a faint path up a gentle grassy ridge which then steepens before easing and turning SW to the small summit cairn of Tom Meadhoin, 621 m.

(2) Retrace the route of ascent, remembering to cross to the E side of the grassy gully just to the S of the bealach to pick up the outward route. When almost at the road, a track will be seen ahead. This leads directly back to the lay by.
