Aldbrough from Garton

Start/Finish

Visitor Car Park (free) just after Aldbrough Holiday Park which is close to the cliffs and the Sellwood Arms. The bus stops at the entrance although there is no actual bus stop. With a friendly car driver, one could be dropped off close to Moat Farm at the end of the road from Garton.

A map isn't really needed for this walk as navigation is simple and straightforward.

Introduction

This an almost level walk although the ground can be rough in places. The view from the cliffs is very similar throughout with few points of interest apart from coastal erosion and large rocks on the shoreline.The walk from Garton adds about 2 km which may have already been walked in reverse on the previous stage. As it is only about 5 km from Moat Farm to Aldbrough where the bus stop is close to the cliff top so some may wish to combine this stage with the one from Garton to Aldbrough so missing out Garton altogether. Some may even opt for a longer section from Withernsea “Castle” to Aldbrough which only adds about 2 – 3 km and has easy access to the bus at each end.

Route

(1) From the bus stop at Garton, walk south to reach the minor road leading to the church. Soon reach a track through a gate. Follow this until a path goes right not far from the church and which leads to the church. Regain the road from the church and follow it to reach the cliff top after Moat Farm. Go through the obvious gate and follow a rough path along the cliff top. The route is fairly obvious although rough in places. Cross an almost hidden bridge before reaching a large inlet which can be walked around. Continue to reach Ringborough where there are old buildings and the remains of a demolished house.

(2) Continue to reach East Newton where the offical path goes inland but, for now, it is possible to continue ahead soon crossing an old track which leads down to the sea. Continue ahead with the official path rejoining soon after. Aldbrough Holiday Park should now be visible so continue ahead to pass the park and reach the road which now goes over the cliff. Turn inland and pass the Sellwood Arms to reach the Visitor Car Park.
