Wether Fell via Roman road from Hawes to Buckden road

Wether Fell via Roman road from Hawes to Buckden road

Start/Finish

The start of the Roman road is usually reached from Hawes, A684, by taking the road towards Kettlewell which goes through Gayle just after leaving Hawes before climbing onto the high moors and reaching over 550 m; this road may be impassable in winter conditions. About 2.5 miles from Gayle, the Roman road starts as a reverse left fork. This is about half a mile before the road to Kettlewell goes left and the Cam Houses road goes right. If coming from the Kettlewell direction, drive past Starbotton to Buckden then turn left for Oughtershaw and follow the road for about 8 miles pastthe Cam Houses road junction to reach the Roman road after about a further half a mile.

Distance/Time

4 km.   About 1 – 2 hours.

Introduction

This is a very easy ascent as the summit as it only involves about 70 m of ascent and only about 30 m from the point where the Roman road is left. The Roman road is a byway so cars can be driven along it but it is far too rough for ordinary cars. It can be cycled but as only 3 km of walking is involved on the Roman road, it may not be worth getting out your bicycle! Dodd Fell lies across the tarmac road and is very prominent. Great Shunner Fell and Lovely Seat can be seen to the north.

Route

(1) Follow the Roman road for about 1.5 km to reach a wooden gate. Go through and immediately take a grassy path forking off left past an old noticeboard. Follow the path to join a grassy track. Turn left and follow the track for about 100 m until taking another grassy path which forks off right. The medium cairn soon comes into view which is the summit of Wether Fell (also known as Drumaldrace), 614 m.

(2) Retrace the outward route.
