Ingleborough (only) from above Ingleton

Ingleborough (only) from above Ingleton

Start/Finish

Ingleton is a large village on the A65 between Settle and Kirkby Lonsdale. There is a village community centre with parking and toilets which is well signed plus a fairly large overflow car park nearby. There is also some street parking available provided it is used sensibly. It is usually possible to park nearer to the start of the walk by following the B6255 Hawes road uphill. Pass Clapham Old Road on the right then the Fell Lane track forks off right soon after. A little further up the road is a rough layby opposite a house and there is other parking still further. Not using the village car parks saves quite a bit of walking.

Introduction

Ingleborough is one of the famous “3 Peaks” with Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside being the other two. This is a simple route but not as exciting as others. A rough track is followed then a reasonable path which meets the summit plateau very close to the highest point. It is worth crossing the summit plateau for good views to Whernside and the Ribblehead Viaduct.

Route

(1) If parking in the layby above the start of Fell Lane then follow the grassy path uphill to meet Fell Lane. If starting lower down or in the village, follow the Hawes road to reach the start of Fell Lane and follow it up. The track is very obvious and is a landrover track until it reaches the only farm at Crina Bottom. After the farm, the track slowly becomes a path and starts to climb more steeply. There are 3 distinct shoulders to cross. Off to the right is the south ridge of Ingleborough known as Little Ingleborough. The final steep section leads onto the summit plateau and the nearby large (wide but not that high) is the highest point on Ingleborough, 724 m. Almost directly ahead is the shelter cross and trig point plus other cairns. It is worth crossing the plateau to see down the other side especially to Ribblehead Viaduct.

(2) Retrace the outward route.
