OS Outdoor Leisure 24: White Peak

Introduction

This is a short walk in the White Peak although the rock is more in keeping with the Dark Peak! The path below the edge gives reasonable views of the edge and its cliffs. Once these are passed, an easy path leads up to the south end of the ridge, from where there is a short diversion to Wellington's Monument, then an easy path goes along the top of the edge.

Route

(1) Walk out of the car park. Turn right and start going downhill. Pass where the bridleways for Baslow and Curbar Edges go off left and right. A little further down the hill reach the Curbar Gap sign at the start of the path on the left below Baslow Edge. Follow the path which soon descends to a more obvious path going S well below the edge. Follow this path, muddy in places, until the diagonal crossroads sign is reached – almost at the end of the edge. Fork left (signed Blackstone Edge) and start gently ascending. Reach the S end of the edge where the path/track splits. Fork right and walk about 200 m to Wellington's Monument then retrace back to the junction.

(2) Continue across, behind the seat, and ascend easily onto the top of the edge. The other main path (left fork after ascending from below the edge) is the main path back but it is set well back from the edge and is less interesting apart from the huge boulder known as the Eagle Stone which is well seen from here. Walk N along the edge enjoying the views down in the directions of Baslow, Calver and Curbar. As you get further N, Curbar Edge becomes increasingly more prominent. There is a viewpoint near to the end of the edge before you exit through a gate onto the car park road.
